A photograph that shouldn’t exist led Michelle Cruise to the Gold Coast — and straight into a legend locals whisper about.

Ghostly lights. A bushranger's mark. Gold hidden, but an ancient skeleton found. Roots of a gum tree on the Nerang River have revealed another secret. The dead paid a toll. Is the river giving up its ghosts? Professor Adler explained the legend.

Part 2 - The Lure

Later, back at her parents' house, Michelle slipped into her old room with Shadow padding after her. The house was quiet—her mother in the kitchen, her father on the phone in his study. Shadow sprawled on her bed while she sat at the small table and opened her laptop to video‑call Sandra Ray, the computer genius on her TV investigative team.

Sandra’s elfin face showed up a moment later, her smile bright and cheeky. “Missed me already?”

Michelle chuckled. “I need your brain, Sandy.”

Sandra raised an eyebrow. “My brain? I thought your father was your first call on weird cases.”

“Supernatural is not exactly a topic he would give a second thought,” Michelle said with a crooked smile. “And this case? It’s straight out of your spooky‑science wheelhouse — ghost lights along the Nerang River. Decades of sightings.”

“Oooh, spooky. Give me the details.”

Michelle summarized the sightings, the drownings, the drifting lights, the gum tree — and finally, the body.

Sandra whistled. “Okay, I’ll dig into it tonight and call you tomorrow.”

“Thanks, Sandy.”

“You're welcome. And Michelle?”

“Yeah?”

“Be careful. Legends don’t kill people. People kill people.”

Michelle ended the call and stared at the dark window, her faint reflection hovering like a ghost in the glass. Legends and old mysteries were her specialty. She solved them on national TV. But murder was different — messier, human — and the thought of stepping into that world left her uneasy. Shadow’s quiet huff behind her came as a warm reminder she wasn’t entirely alone.

She crossed the room and curled up beside him, resting a hand on his soft fur. The steady rise and fall of his breathing eased her thoughts, and she drifted into sleep.

“Hey, is that a dog in your bed?” Sandra’s voice woke her the next morning.

Alarmed, Michelle sat up, swept her long hair aside, and blinked at the screen. “Morning, Sandy.” She patted the German shepherd beside her. “Say hello to Shadow.”

Shadow lifted his big head and yawned.

Sandra giggled. “Nice to meet you, too, Shadow.”

“With the formalities over, what did you find out?” Michelle asked.

“I’ve got four possibilities for you, Michelle. So, make your pick,” Sandra went straight into it. “Bioluminescent fungi would be my top pick — steady glow, grows on roots, intensifies after rain. Will‑o’-the‑wisp is your second choice — methane ignition, drifting lights. Glow‑worms for third. And fishing gear reflections if someone wants to fake something.”

Michelle felt a chill. “Someone could manipulate the lights?”

“Oh, absolutely. And if someone wanted to lure a girl to a specific spot? Easy. I’ll dig some more and call you with a full breakdown.”

“You’re awesome, Sandy.”

“I know,” she smiled.
