🔍The Lost Wall of Skulls

Near Kilconnell Abbey in County Galway, archaeologists believe they may have located a mass grave connected to one of Ireland's bloodiest battles.

After the Battle of Aughrim in 1691, thousands lay dead. Local accounts tell of Jacobite soldiers being buried in a pit beside the friary — and of something considerably more gruesome.

A wall made from their skulls.

The macabre structure reportedly survived for generations before collapsing in the nineteenth century. The skulls were then buried, and their precise resting place was eventually forgotten.

Now researchers are using drone-mounted lidar to search for the lost burial site, hoping to carry out a trial excavation.

More than three centuries after the battle, the soldiers — and perhaps their infamous wall of skulls — may surface again.
