Lost Viking Outpost Found Beneath Greenland Ice

A research team using ground‑penetrating radar has identified the remains of a Norse outpost buried under centuries of ice. The site contains longhouses, iron tools, and a collapsed signal tower — suggesting the settlement was abandoned suddenly. Historians are already debating what forced the retreat. More...

Forbidden Chamber Unsealed in Ancient Egyptian Necropolis

Archaeologists working near Saqqara have opened a sealed chamber untouched since the 6th Dynasty. Inside: a set of ritual objects deliberately smashed and arranged in a pattern that doesn’t match any known funerary practice. The team believes the chamber was hidden to erase a name from history. More...

Medieval Monastery Records Reveal a Vanished Pilgrim Route

A newly digitized manuscript from a French monastery describes a pilgrimage path that does not appear on any surviving maps. The route ends at a “sanctuary of silence,” a location scholars cannot yet identify. Some believe the Church erased it after a scandal lost to time. More...

Previously in Bushranger’s Treasure

A photograph that shouldn’t exist led Michelle Cruise to the Gold Coast — and straight into a legend locals whisper about.

Ghostly lights. A bushranger's mark. Gold hidden, but an ancient skeleton found. And now — the roots of a gum tree on the Nerang River have bared another secret...

Chapter Four

Bushranger toll

Police tape fluttered in the humid breeze, a thin yellow line cutting the riverbank into before and after.

Michelle stood just behind Martin, hands loosely folded, saying nothing. This was his scene. She knew the rules — and so did everyone else.

Uniforms moved with quiet efficiency along the waterline. A forensic photographer crouched down, documenting the body position under the exposed roots and the shallow cavity beneath them. The river murmured beside it all, brown and slow, as if nothing of consequence had happened here.

Dr. Simon bent down to examine the body.

“Female,” he said to Martin. “Late teens.”

“Time of death?”

“Between ten and fourteen months,” Simon replied, straightening, peeling off his gloves. Age had slowed his movements, but not his precision. “I won’t be firm until the autopsy, but based on exposure, insect activity, and tissue condition...” he paused.

“So it’s recent,” Michelle murmured, eyes drifting to the tree roots that cut into the riverbank like giant fingers, a faint greenish smear on its bark.

“Quite recent,” Dr. Simon said, giving Michelle a polite nod, but addressing Martin. “And deliberate. But as I said, I will know more after the autopsy.”

Martin exhaled slowly. “A girl was missing fourteen months ago. Local. Hiking with friends. We searched for weeks.”

Simon met his eyes. “Then you’ve likely found her.”

Michelle felt the shift — the quiet click as the legend gave way to reality.

“Doctor!” A voice called.

Simon turned. “Yes, Lee?”

“There’s something in the victim’s hand,” the CSI man said evenly.

Simon stepped over at once. Martin followed. Michelle stayed where she was — until Martin motioned her over.

Dr. Simon knelt, slipping on fresh gloves, and looked at the body’s clenched fingers.

“Good catch,” he murmured, carefully easing the hand open. A coin slid into his palm — heavy. The light caught on its edge as he placed it into the plastic bag that the forensic tech held out.

“What is it, Lee?” Martin asked.

Lee raised the bag to his eye level, scrutinizing it. “Gold Sovereign. Late nineteenth century.”

"The dead's toll," Michelle murmured.

The three pairs of eyes turned to her.

"Sorry," she lifted a shoulder. "It just... occurred to me."
